Via Ferrata Advice and Equipment

Via Ferrata describes high-level paths with fixed climbing aids, such as cables and steel ladders. Originally built for military use during the first World War, they were later developed and maintained for leisure use. The main Via Ferrata area is in the Italian Dolimites, but they are also found in the French Alps, Austrian Tyrol and Sweden.

Via Ferratas have become very popular as they allow safe access to spectacular and exposed routes without needing technical climbing skills. Not that VFs are tame - paths are vertiginous and ladders long and steep - so good safety gear, specifically designed for VF, is essential.
