Blackland Farm, East Grinstead

Level 1

Martin Robinson, Warden, Blackland Farm, Grinstead Lane, East Grinstead, West Sussex, RH19 4HP. Tel: 01342 810493

Blackland Farm is a major Guide Association activity centre and campsite. Facilities are extensive and include: Indoor and Outdoor Climbing Walls, 2 abseil towers, zipwire, archery, canoeing, swimming pool, obstacle course, orienteering and others.

The climbing walls and towers may be hired using your own instruction (must show certificates), or using Blackland Farm staff who are Level 1 qualified or above.

For more information, please see the Blackland page in the Girlguiding UK website at:

http://www.girlguiding.org.uk/info/outabout/article.asp?sectionid=104&id=118

Stone Farm Rocks, East Grinstead

Level 2

Just down the road from Blackland Farm or a 10 minute walk from the site are Stone Farm Rocks. A small outcrop but with some good routes for beginners, this is a classic Southern Sandstone crag.

Erosion problems here are very bad, and we would ask that groups try to use the crag as infrequently as possible. Certainly if you do use the crag please observe all guidelines regarding crag conservation such as setting up belays directly above the climb with krab over the edge, no lowering off, use static slings and so on. You should know all of these guidelines in any event if you are qualified at this level.

Blackland Farm staff are available to instruct here; please contact the office.

Claverham Community College, Battle

North Trade Road, Battle.

This school has an excellent climbing wall on the end wall of a gym inside. It was built by Entreprises and has slabby, vertical and overhanging sections. The quality is superb and the facility is very well maintained and run. More like a commercial wall than a school facility.

Contact Danny Ockmore, Head of PE, for details.

Broadstone Warren Scout Site, Forest Row

Level 1

Contact: Julian Pierce (Warden), Broadstone Warren Scout Camp, Forest Row, RH18 5JS.

Tel:01342 822573 Fax: 824055

This beautiful wooded scout site is reputed to be the UK's largest scout campsite. There is new abseil/climbing tower on site, professionally constructed. This is perfectly usable, with safe access and good belays.

The Girlguiding Level 1 certificate should be accepted. The site now has GGUK Level 1 qualified staff available. There are also several other activities and excellent indoor accommodation available here.

Perrywood Campsite, Lingfield

This campsite has appeared on some listings; however it now seems to be closed and has certainly been unused for some time. We understand that this may be part of a closure scheme for some Scout campsites (see an article on the Scoutbase website Press release section at: http://www.scoutbase.org.uk/hq/pr/headlines.htm )

Spur Campsite, Slindon

This site is listed as having climbing, but there appears not to be any. More info to follow.
