Walton Firs

Level 1

Sue & Dave McIntosh, Walton Firs, Convent Lane, Cobham, Surrey, KT11 1HB.

Tel: 01932 863243

The Warden is fully aware of the Girlguiding Climbing Scheme and accepts it as a valid award; it is likely that he will become involved as an assessor sometime during the next year and potential candidates may want to contact the site.

The site has a 20 foot climbing and abseiling tower, with stair access at the rear. New staff would need some familiarisation with the setup and working methods at the top of the tower. These present no difficulties once outlined.

This is a very new professionally run wall with very good facilities. They currently only accept outside instructors who hold the SPA, and you need to provide the originals of your SPA, 1st Aid and indemnity insurance (for which see GGUK insurance). You also need to provide forms showing that you have parental consent to take each student in your care, have passed their own competency test beforehand, be a member (£10), and book beforehand. You can have a maximum of 6 students under 18, and they must all wear helmets. There's a time limit of 1.5 hours. All a bit prohibitive and much more bureaucratic than most other walls, but it is a good facility.

The wall can provide instructors, some of whom hold the SPA and some of whom hold the onsite award. As this is assessed by the in house MIA holder Paolo Fubini, this is acceptable within the GGUK scheme and you may use these instructors.

Please contact the wall for prices; all equipment can be hired at the wall.
