Frequently asked questions

When will our site/abseil tower/wall be inspected?

Soon! We are trying to see all locations used by Guides as soon as we can - however the list is long. If you don't appear, or need inspecting very soon, then please contact Gilly Davies or Bryn Beach (see Contacts page).

If we aren't inspected, can we continue operating?

Yes - providing you operate under the GA rules existing at the time. You DON'T need to be inspected before continuing as you are!

We have a local scheme for our tower/wall - will the Guide Association accept it as valid?

Possibly - but ONLY if it is assessed directly by a holder of the MIA or MIC, and under no other circumstances. Send us the details/syllabus and put us in touch with the MIA/MIC assessor for validation.

We just want to do abseiling, but no climbing - can we exempted/can we run a local scheme?

Sorry, no. These qualifications are designed to be accessible and at a reasonable level - if people could not pass the Level 1 assessment, then in reality they should not be instructing either activity.

One of the biggest problems in implementing the scheme has been lack of information or misinformation - if you think that the scheme is too hard, doesn't meet your needs etc. then CALL US! Many people have mentioned aspects of the scheme as relayed to them by others which were either plain incorrect or just didn't exist! For first hand information please contact Bryn Beach, Gilly Davies or Steve Ranger (see Contacts page)

There aren't any courses being run in our area - how can we get qualified?

Ask for a course to be run - we'll arrange it for you. If you can arrange a venue with climbing wall and abseil tower within a short drive then we'll send you an instructor at a daily rate; typically a course with 8 people on it would cost only approximately £20-25 per person for a weekend.

Following our 'Train the Trainer' courses, we now have a pool of Association instructors. We will always approach these first as the cost will be minimal; outside/freelance staff are only used when these are not available.

BURSARIES - These are available for instructors who are taking courses to qualify to teach Guide Asociation members climbing. For a form, please contact Gilly Davies(see contacts page)
