Anglia - Bedfordshire Bedford District Scout Site - Jordans Close Scout Activity Centre Boyd Memorial Campsite (Biggleswade & District Scouts) Bedford District Scout Site - Jordans Close Scout Activity Centre LEVEL ONE General Situated on New Road, Great Barford, Bedfordshire (OS Sheet No. 153 Grid 135 518). The climbing facility is part of an activity site close to the river. The wall is a part brick, part wooden structure. It is very old and dated in terms of artificial climbing facilities. The wall is not fenced off and there is no waiting area designated. The landing area beneath the climbs is concrete and caution should be observed. Qualifications Required: The Guide level one award is acceptable to supervise climbing activities. Sessions are: 9.00am - 1.00pm, 1.00pm - 5.00pm, 5.00pm - 9.00pm (4 hours). Cheques should be made payable to: Bedford District Scout Council. Instruction: Climbing instruction is available at no cost.Please insist on SPA qualified staff as the Scout M form is not sufficient for the GA.However, transport fees and refreshments must be covered. For details of instructors contact Miss Rachel Pothecarry 01234 303 291. Special Considerations: Climbers must be tied in, no karabiner attachment. Top roping only, no lead climbing. When belaying alone the belayer should be tied down. Only releasable abseils are permissible. Climbers must be nine and a half years of age or above. Caution should be exercised at this site as the facility is old, dated and the landing areas are concrete! Boyd Memorial Campsite (Biggleswade & District Scouts) LEVEL ONE General: Situated in Henlow, Bedfordshire. The climbing wall is a new free-standing tower. It is four sided, with two sides dedicated to climbing, one side flat with no holds for abseiling, and one side open. There is a three laddered ascent within the tower for setting up. The whole facility is fenced off and the gate is padlocked. There are benches for those not involved in the activities and a clearly marked safe area. The landing areas are grass. General: The De Montfort University campus is sited all over the town of Bedford. The climbing facility is located at The Alexander Sports Centre, Sidney Road. Qualifications Required: Minimum of SPA, the Guide Association Level One award is not recognised. GR SP 969 309 Contact: John Lilley 07687 788401 Campsite: Mrs Liz Holmes 01908 281570 Email: johnlilley@vodafone.net This is a 10m high wall with bolt-on holds on a flat brick wall surface on the side of a building. There are solid scaffold type anchors at the top, and abseiling is possible on the opposite side. The centre has an SPA qualified instructor, Mr John Lilley (verified by us with the MLTB) but Guide Association Level 1 Leaders may also use the wall. There is equipment at the wall which is regularly inspected. .
