Stoke Damerel Community College Contact: John Axworthy A wall on the side of an indoor sports hall. Belays from scaffold bars.

The wall here is rarely used by outside groups; it is on the end of the sports hall wall, and the hall is usually booked for other activities in the evenings. However, should you wish to use it this might be possible by calling Mrs. Knight, the Business Manager of the school. The school are not aware of any qualifications or requirements, but there is appraently a teacher in the Science Department (name not known) who may be able to help. Therefore you would need to check the liability position should you visit the wall; as well as doing a prior visit and talking to the teacher in charge to discuss access to the top for setting up ropes etc. The school do not offer instruction to outside groups; they will only consider it as rental of a facility to an outside group. Level 1 61 Haven Road, Exeter, EX2 8DP. Tel: 01392 434668 website: www.haven-banks.co.uk This centre has a small outdoor climbing wall in a courtyard about 20m wide x 6m high, with chain belays for a few climbs in place. There are approximately 6 or 7 routes.
The centre is a Devon County Council centre and is AALA licensed. Bear in mind however that climbing on this wall is not a licensable activity ; the centre's licence does cover climbing and therefore is a good indication of overall instructional standards for climbing when looking at an activity centre. It is unlikely that outside instructors would be permitted to use this facility. This extremely hard to find Scout centre is very close to the Dewerstone crag. At one time groups used the centre and would have been able to walk to the crag and climb. However, there is currently a problem with the maintenance and potential ongoing ownership of the centre and it is not used. Valley of Rocks, Lynton Level 3 (SPA) At Lynton there is a well known tourist area called the Valley of Rocks. On top of one hill overlooking the cliff is 'Castle Rock', a small crag which gives exposure as it is situated on top of the hill. The crag is a good venue in a beautiful area. It was suggested that this crag could be Level 2, but it is definitely SPA territory only. Take care in accessing the top of the crag; an easy climb is required which is OK in ascent but could be awkward to descend in wet weather.
